Sell on Etsy? The Number One Mistake Etsy Sellers Make and Three Ways to Fix It!

!±8± Sell on Etsy? The Number One Mistake Etsy Sellers Make and Three Ways to Fix It!

I sell on Etsy and have done so for the last year and a half, and I love the site. But it never ceases to amaze me how many times I see crafters making amazing items, and then selling themselves short when it comes to photographing their creations!

Taking pictures of your items is key, and I believe it's at least as vital as making your crafts in the first place. You've gone to all the trouble to create something which you believe people are going to want to buy -- so you need to put just as much effort into making sure your listing shines! Here are three common mistakes people make and how to fix them:

Blurry Pictures!

The best way to photograph your items is to set your camera on a tripod first. I find yard-sales are perfect for getting cheap tripods. If you're photographing jewelry or smaller items - you can easily pick up a mini-tripod for under online.

If you don't own a tripod, use a couple of hardback books (the dictionary makes a great base for cameras!). The main aim is to keep the camera as steady as possible and if you have a timer on your camera -- try using it to avoid shaky pictures!

Background

I see so many people who sell on Etsy, and take quick snapshots of their jewelry/art/accessories draped over carpets, tablecloths and even on lawns! It really doesn't flatter their hard work!

To solve this - get a nice piece of card stock from a craft store -- choose a color which is going to compliment your items (white works well for jewelry) and make sure you have good natural lighting or a couple of lamps focused on your items. Better still, you can make a light box for a couple of dollars, a quick search online will give you plenty of good tutorials. It's amazing the difference a light box can make!

Colors and Sharpness

Finally, make sure you adjust the colors and sharpness of your photographs. If you own Photoshop, then this can be done by running the "sharpen" filter and then adjusting levels and colors. But if you don't own Photoshop and want to do this for free, then a great site to use is picnik where you can upload your pictures and adjust them in a few simple steps to really make them look great.

Photography Lessons

!±8± Photography Lessons

The traditional way to get photography lessons is to attend a photography school or program outside of the home. Nowadays there are Online and distance education options available as well. However, for the amateur photographer who just wants some help improving their skills, and doesn't desire to enroll in a school, there are some great free options available.

Nowadays, the focus is definitely on digital photography. However, there are still classes being taught in more traditional photography. Despite the fact that film is obsolete, the rules of exposure and composition are exactly the same in digital photography. So, many photography professionals still recommend that students get a basic knowledge of film photography, in addition to their digital training.

Today's cameras have such advanced automatic functions, that the majority of amateur photographers don't feel the need to take any photography lessons, and learn more advanced techniques. However, having a mastery of light, exposure, depth of field, and composition can take your photography from the realm of the "snap-shot" to the polished look of a professionally taken photograph.

There are people who choose to pay a professional instructor for one on one lessons in photography. This can be a real boon since all of the attention that would be spread thin over an entire classroom, is then focused in on you the individual. Also, some people are shy about having their photos shown in front of a classroom, and would rather be evaluated more privately. Also, this is a great option for those who don't care to earn a degree, but simply want to learn the needed skills.

It is possible to get some great photography instruction at absolutely no cost. There are many websites offering free lessons in photography, which are often of very high quality. In fact, for the very independent person who doesn't care about earning and degree or certification in photography, free lessons can be a wonderful option. Free instruction can also be helpful to the photographer that is already accomplished, as nobody can know everything, and being able to quickly look up the answer to a photography related question is very convenient.

The true drawback to free lessons is the lack of support from an instructor. Getting your photos critiqued by a real person can be invaluable. Often friends and family will just tell you that your work is nice no matter what they really think, or they don't have a sufficiently trained eye to offer real help in improving your photos. Still, free photography lessons can dramatically improve your photos if you really make the effort to learn from them.

Air Purifier Scams - We're Blowing the Whistle Part 2

!±8± Air Purifier Scams - We're Blowing the Whistle Part 2

We will see the evolution of the Home Air Purifier, as some call it. And I want to also mention that the term air purifier has been abused. Many claim to sell the best air purifiers when in essence they're only air filters. So we'll start there.

An air filter is a device made to draw air through filters, made up of different materials, to capture particles in the air. There are still quite a few of these selling today as air purifiers . But they now use different, more sophisticated filters such as charcoal, activated carbon or Hepa. This new filters have better absorption of particles and some chemicals, but they are still filters that you have to replace periodically. Now, how much of the air in your home, do you think the device can circulate through? The fan of a central air conditioning unit, which is quite powerful, can only circulate about 20% to 40% of the air in your home. What about the rest of the stagnant air in your home? Keep that in mind.

Then we have the electric air filter or electrostatic precipitator, which I call the 1st generation ionizer. This unit used negative ions to attract particles in the air to anything below. That idea evolved, and now uses positive ions to attract particles in the air to the negative collector plates in the unit, thus collecting even small particles of dust without the use of filters. Is this an Air purifier? I don't think so, the plates need constant maintenance, because when the plates are covered with particles, they no longer catch the particles, they just go by. And again, how much air actually circulates through there?

Along came the ozone generators, that use ozone to clean the air. They tried to duplicate what nature does outside, but what nature does is a three step process, not just one. Ozone is not bad, it's created naturally for a specific purpose, but as they say "too much of a good thing, is not good". One thing about ozone generators, is that they pretty much cover the whole area they're in. Air purifier? Not quite.

Now comes what I call UV technology. The beginning of the air purifier , It started when NASA needed to remove chemical pollutants from within the space shuttle during it's mission trips. The solution Photo-Catalytic Oxidation, a process in which UV light causes a reaction on titanium dioxide, which in turn would create oxidizers that dissolved pollutants and turn them into water vapor. That evolved into what is called Photohydroionization a process much like Photo-Catalytic Oxidation, but this time the UV light causes a reaction on different metals, that create various oxidizers that turn pollutants to their original form of oxygen or hydrogen.

But even that has evolved to what is now known as Radiant Catalytic Ionization. This process uses a UV light and a rare metal hydrophylic coating to produce hydroxyls (combined water and oxygen particles) that acts like a purifying plasma to scrub the air. It also duplicates ionization (electrically charged particles generated in a thunderstorm) and oxygenation (the oxygen saturation of air to purify contaminants) that occur in nature and uses them to clean your indoor air. This technology has the three steps process to clean indoor air, ionization (removes particles from your breathing space), oxygenation (removes odors) and irradiation (kills germs and bacteria). The purifying plasma travels all over the house and get in every nook and cranny it can find, killing germs, bacteria and viruses on every surface giving you complete coverage. Finally, we have an air purifier.

Do Not Throw Away Your Old Photo Paper Prints

!±8± Do Not Throw Away Your Old Photo Paper Prints

Many people still have large number of old fashion photo paper prints in their homes. Even if you threw away your old film camera and you are exclusively using digital there is a good chance that you still have many photos that are important to you in paper prints format. It is a good idea to upgrade those prints to the new digital format - here is how,

It is most likely that your photo prints are organized in this way or another in photo albums. The old fashion photo album book had two main purposes. First it was intended to allow for easier organization and browsing of photos as photo albums can be categorized by event, year or any in any other way that make sense to you. The second purpose was to protect the paper prints. Paper ages it fades and turn yellow. Albums are safer provide a safer environment allowing paper prints to last longer.

There are three main types of old fashion prints: paper, slides and negatives. Paper prints are the most common format. The usually come in standard sizes like 4X6 and 5X7. Negatives which are developed film are saved to allow future new prints of your photos. Slides are similar to negatives but they allow projection of the photo on a big screen using a special slide projector.

Upgrading your old photo paper stack involves some technique of converting paper photos to digital pixel based photos. This process is also known as scanning. While there are many different techniques and equipment for scanning in essence all scanning process are similar. Some device is used to electronically read or view the paper photo and convert it into a series of pixels each with its unique color and intensity. All those pixels put together comprise a digital photo that can be store as a computer file. This computer file, usually in the common JPEG format can then be used as any other digital camera photo file.

Different scanning methods vary in cost and quality. While you can spend a large sum of money to professionally scan your photos for most home users a cheap and simple scanning method will suffice. Photo paper prints can be effectively scanned by a simple scanner device that you can buy for less than 0. This process is time consuming though since you will need to manually feed every photo to the scanner. For a large number of photos you could choose to either by a more sophisticated scanner with an automatic photo feeder or to mail your photo prints to a professional scanning service.

One thing to consider when scanning photo prints is the scanning resolution: The same way that your digital camera has a mega pixels number that determines the number of pixels in a digital photo - scanners have a similar attribute that determines how many mega pixels are going to be in the converted digital photo file. This is also known as the scanner resolution and it is measured by the number of dots per inch that the scanner can produce. Most scanners can scan at 1200 DPI or more. Most scanners can also be set to scan in less of their maximum resolution. The higher the resolution the slower the scan and the bigger the digital photo file size. So what is the right resolution? The rule of thumb is that for most paper prints scanning at 300 to 600 DPI is enough as usually the print quality itself is not higher than that.

After you have converted your paper prints to digital photo files you can do anything that you can do with any other digital camera generated photo files. In addition to simply viewing them on your computer screen, you can share them with family and friends, use photo processing software to enhance them and more. And the most important thing, once converted to digital photo files they will never fade, turn yellow or lose their quality.

Special Effect Photo Filters - Using The Apt Filter To Suit The Purpose

!±8± Special Effect Photo Filters - Using The Apt Filter To Suit The Purpose

Maybe you have pictures in magazines and on the net that seem unreal or surreal seen. Most of them have no doubt worked on the computer, but some are affected during the recovery process. This can be achieved with the use of glass rings called filters. They adapt to the front of the lens. Filters are used in a variety of categories and the effects are available, and let us discuss some of them.

Black & White filters
The filters in black and white in color are in fact madeglass! Their importance could be hard to understand by a person who has no clue about black and white photography. It is out of the scope of this article to explain why color filters affect black and white film, but we shall explain the effect. If you shoot a blue sky using a red filter, the sky appears darkish. this is because blue and red are complimentary colors like black and white. The red filter allows all other colors to pass through it, except for blue. And so, the image remains unaffected except for the blue areas which come out blackish. This is in fact the beauty of black and white photography, and it can never be faked or cloned on computers and digital cameras.

Color Filters
Color filters or filters for general use come in a variety of categories. The multi image filter multiplies the center of the image so you see many images repeated, like the disco effect of the seventies. The star filters make a point of light to appear as a star. They are very good for commercial uses. Have you ever seen images in magazines that make the model's skin glow as if there was a soft light around the face alone? Well that effect is achieved with the diffusing filter. It softens the light as well as removes the blemishes of the skin. Never use this if sharpness is your main objective, such as when shooting interiors. It is good for portraits though. And then there is the warm tone filter which adds a warm effect to the skin. Other filters such as red and orange can add a dramatic effect to a sunset.

Have you seen images where the center of the photo is clear but everything else is out of focus? That is done with the center spot filter, which has clear glass in the center of the filter alone, but diffuses all around it. These are just a few of the filters that one can use to get some amazing effects on photographs. Many if not all of the color effects can be done on computer today, so we now see a rise in shooting basic raw, sharp images which are later enhanced on computer using software such as the popular Adobe Photoshop.
